Air Quality Hub

The Air Quality Hub is an online portal, commissioned by DEFRA, where local authorities across the UK can share insights, publications, and events aimed at reducing air pollution.

The challenge

The founders of the Air Quality Hub needed a platform that would let councils collate and access resources while also encouraging collaboration around air quality strategy ideas. As a high-profile digital asset with nationwide scope, robust cybersecurity was essential to safeguard data privacy.

The solution

We developed a fully accessible WordPress website, using an uncluttered design style, simple navigation, and prominent signposting to maximise readability and make it easy for users to find information.

The platform offers a range of interactive features to invite engagement. Members can add content to their individual accounts, endorse high-quality information by using a bespoke scoring system, and discuss air quality initiatives on a dedicated forum.

Castlegate secured the WordPress build comprehensively to stand up to rigorous third-party pentesting, and provide ongoing support services to ensure that the platform remains safe, functional, and accessible.

The results

  • The platform’s user-friendly design has enhanced the sharing of knowledge and resources between local authorities.
  • Interactive features have simplified content contribution and improved collaboration between members.
  • The legacy of the project was secured when the management of the Air Quality Hub was taken on by DEFRA in 2024.
